Empakai & Oldonyo Lengai Experience - 7 Day Culture & Hiking

(Arusha, Empakai, Oldonyo Lengai)

DAY 1     ARUSHA
Clients are met at their arrival point in Arusha and transferred to their accommodation for pre-adventure briefing and overnight. Town exploration if time allows.

DAY 2     EMPAKAI
After breakfast, we begin the drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation and the Crater of Empakai, where we camp on the Crater rim.(2700m).

DAY 3     NAIYOBI
We amble along the rim of the crater today and have a magnificent view across the Crater and also the Great Rift Valley in the distance towards Lake Natron and Oldonyo Lengai. We take a picnic lunch en-route and meet Maasai warriors along the way attending to cattle. (15km – 7.5 hrs)
NAIYOBI CAMP (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 4     ACACIA FOREST
Hiking form Naiyobi village, we meet with a array of blanketed men, women and children who escort us with curiosity part of the way. We enter the Acacia woodland and then find a clear view across the Rift Valley Escarpment, enjoying the observation of many species of birds and trees

(10km – 6 hrs).
ACACIA CAMP (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 5     OLDONYO LENGAI
We leave the forest behind and find ourselves amongst the ancient cattle trails of the Maasai, winding our way down to the base of the active volcano of Oldonyo Lengai. We arrive mid-afternoon and proceed to rest in preparation for the midnight ascent up the Crater wall (20km–10hrs).

DAY 6     ARUSHA
We arrive to the Crater rim to enjoy a sunrise across the Rift Valley and to explore the lunar-like Crater of Oldonyo Lengai with its sulphur smells and hot air vents. After descending, we enjoy a well deserved brunch and our car arrives to transfer us back to Arusha.

DAY 7     BEYOND
Today we depart for our homes with memories of truly walking amongst the Maasai. We are transferred to our Arusha departure point for our journey beyond.
