Exotic Expeditions - 8 Day Machame Route & 6 Day Zanzibar

(An alternate Kilimanjaro route is inter-changeable with this itinerary)

SUN DAY 1     ARUSHA
Meet and transfer to your accommodation for pre-trek briefing.
MT MERU GAME LODGE & SANCTUARY (Dinner)

MON DAY 2     ARUSHA-MACHAME CAMP
We begin today by driving to the village of Machame on the south western side of Mt Kilimanjaro. After registration formalities we begin our hiking through a dense forest of fig and rubber trees and the pretty begonia flowers. This vegetation transforms into a tropical forest and then to tall grasses and giant heather. We arrive at camp in the late afternoon as we will pace ourselves to retain strength.
MACHAME CAMP (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

TUE DAY 3     MACHAME CAMP-SHIRA CAMP
We are woken every morning with the offering of ‘Beddy Tea’ (a mountain equivalent of breakfast in bed), before we make our way to the mess tent for a more hearty breakfast. The trail we follow today takes us through a ghostly landscape of giant groundsel, volcanic rocks and caves. We take lunch en-route just before we reach Shira Plateau and then continue up the steep incline to reach camp by mid-afternoon.

WED DAY 4     SHIRA CAMP-BARRANCO CAMP
With sunrise over the entire Shira Plateau, we start our day with views across to Mt Meru and the Shira Needles. We rest for lunch as the Lava Tower pass and then continue via Great Barranco and the descent to our sheltered camp. We pass tranquil streams and waterfalls along the way that merge down the mountain to form Umbwe River.
BARRANCO CAMP (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

THU DAY 5     BARRANCO CAMP-KARANGA CAMP

Today’s trekking takes us up and down ridges after we tackle the challenge of Barranco Wall. We arrive at our camp for a hot lunch and take the opportunity to explore the Karanga Valley in the afternoon.
KARANGA CAMP (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

FRI DAY 6     KARANGA CAMP-BARAFU CAMP
The Alpine desert terrain of today opens up to reveal the jaggedly stunning peak of Mawenzi and the seemingly distant peak of Kibo. The vegetation we are experiencing today consists of lichens and losses and resembles a very lunar landscape. We arrive to camp early afternoon in preparation of a midnight departure for the summit.
BARAFU CAMP (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

SAT DAY 7     BARAFU CAMP-MWEKA CAMP
We wake at midnight to prepare ourselves for the assault on the summit of Kibo by taking in hot drinks and snacks and glucose if necessary. We commence climbing, with difficulty, at around 1am on a path that is flanked by glaciers and we arrive at Stellar Point around sunrise. The one hour round trip, along the icy crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5896m) is our next challenge and after completing that we have arrived at the highest point on the African continent. After gazing around us for a limited time, we descend back to Barafu where we enjoy a well earned rest and refreshments before continuing on to Mweka Camp.
MWEKA CAMP (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

SUN DAY 8     MWEKA CAMP-ARUSHA
On this final day of the trek, climbers descend to the National Park Gate at Mweka Village. Most climbers arrive before noon and our awaiting vehicle whisks us off to our accommodation and optional visit to Arusha town and craft markets. Trek de-briefing and climb presentations are carried out late afternoon/evening.
MT MERU GAME LODGE & SANCTUARY (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

MON DAY 9     ARUSHA-ZANZIBAR-MATEMWE

MATEMWE BUNGALOWS (Breakfast, Dinner)

TUE DAY 10     MATEMWE
While staying at Matemwe, on the north-eastern shores of Zanzibar, we are able to lay as idle as we please or join adventures around the island like diving, snorkelling or dhow cruising. Laze by the pool with cocktails and prepare yourself for a tropical get-away.
MATEMWE BUNGALOWS (Breakfast,Lunch, Dinner)

WED DAY 11     MATEMWE
The choices of today are similar as yesterday - all at your own time. Perhaps a Spice Tour is on the menu today or swimming with the dolphins.
