Migration and arid lands – Samburu and Masai Mara, Kenya photo safari 2017

Dates - 22/07/2017 – 30/07/2017 (Fully booked)

Guests should arrive in Nairobi on July 21st 2017 or in the early morning of July 22nd 2017. We’ll depart to Samburu by road on July 22nd, where we’ll stay for 3 nights. We’ll then fly directly to the Masai Mara for 5 nights. Return to Nairobi will be at approximately 18.00 of July 30th 2017.

This safari will take us to two completely different habitats in Kenya, encountering a vast array of wildlife and birds species. Photographic opportunities are excellent and diverse in both parks.

We’ll start from the semi-arid country of Northern Kenya in Samburu National Reserve (3 nights). Here the Ewaso Nyiro river flows through beautiful rocky hills and doum palm trees. Thirsty animals come to the river daily to drink and bathe, while Lions and Leopards lurk among the rocks and bushes. Elephants are plentiful here and it’s wonderful to see them swim and mud-bathe. We’ll also have a chance to see and photograph species of animals that are found only in this habitat, such as the Grevy’s Zebra, Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk, Reticulated Giraffe and Somali Ostrich, and an amazing birdlife.

We’ll then fly to the wide savannah of the Masai Mara (5 nights), where we’ll have excellent possibilities to photograph the famous big cats, Lions, Cheetahs and Leopards and we’ll search for the equally interesting small cats, Servals and Caracals. We’ll follow them through the day, photograph them as they search for prey, defend their territories, play or simply relax under a magnificent Mara sky. Depending on the situations, sometimes we might concentrate on one family of cats for more time, learning to see the world through their eyes. In this period the great Wildebeests’ migration is in the Mara, giving us the opportunity to see huge herds of animals walking across the plains or the magnificent river crossings, one of the most amazing natural spectacles on earth.

This safari will be for a maximum of 8 guests on two vehicles. Each guest will have a full row of seats available to photograph comfortably on both sides. Couples may request to share a row of seats, for a maximum of 1 couple per vehicle. Minimum of 5 guests are required for the safari to take place.

We use extended Land Cruiser specifically configured for wildlife photography. Each Land Cruiser seats 7 guests on three rows of seats, but we give each photographer a full row. Vehicles have ample side openings, supports for tripod heads, open roof and ample space and loads of bean bags on board. The whole trip will be by road.

In Samburu we’ll sleep in a lodge inside the park on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro river, in excellent positions to access the most prolific areas of the park. The lodge has en-suite rooms and good cuisine. In the Masai Mara we will sleep in two wonderful camps in the two most prolific areas for wildlife photography. The camps are small, intimate and completely unfenced, so animals will walk through the camp at night. The tents are extremely comfortable, all are en-suite with toilets and showers, and food is excellent.

Federico Veronesi will be your guide for the whole safari. He will share his time equally between the two vehicles. Throughout the safari he will share his knowledge on the wildlife and parks of Kenya. Through the years he learned to understand and predict animals’ behaviour, ensuring you’ll often be in the best spot for photography, all without running from one place to the other and most importantly without disturbing them or destroying their environment. Federico will provide assistance to participants on all aspects of wildlife photography, from composition and light in the field, to processing of images in the evening in camp.

The second vehicle will be driven by a local guide certified by the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association and with extensive knowledge of the parks visited.

The cost for this safari will be 5,990 USD p/person on sharing basis, including:

Full board accommodation for 3 nights in Samburu and 5 in Masai Mara;

Park Fees;

Internal flights Samburu – Masai Mara and Masai Mara – Nairobi;

Guiding by Federico Veronesi sharing between two vehicles;

Full row on Land Cruiser 4×4 with unlimited game drives from before sunrise to after sunset;

2 airport transfers.

Elephants and big cats – Photo safari in Masai Mara, Naivasha and Amboseli, Kenya

Dates - 14/01/2017 – 22/01/2017

This safari will explore two of Kenya’s most famous and beautiful parks, Amboseli and Maasai Mara, and we’ll spend one night in Lake Naivasha.

Masai Mara National Reserve
The Masai Mara is a National Reserve, managed locally by the Narok County Council. It shares its border to the south with the Serengeti and Tanzania. Its surface spans for 1,510 square kilometres, at an elevation of 1500 mts above sea level. It comprises different habitats and environments.

The Masai Mara supports one of the highest concentrations of game in Africa. In particular, it is the number of predators and the high chances of seeing them that make the Mara so unique and attractive for wildlife photographers and enthusiasts.

Here we will photograph the famous big cats, Leopards, Cheetahs and Lions, but we shall also seek opportunities to photograph the equally fascinating small cats, Caracals and Servals.

Amboseli NP
Amboseli NP is one of the best places in the world to observe and photograph African Elephants. We’ll spend a long time with them, photographing their daily activities, their social interactions and behaviors. Their lives will unfold before our eyes and cameras, with the amazing backdrop of Mt Kilimanjaro and the bare and dusty plains of this amazing area of Africa. Besides Elephants, Amboseli NP hosts sizeable populations of Lions, Cheetahs, Giraffes, Zebras, Wildebeests, Buffalos, Hippos and other Antelopes and Gazelles.

Lake Naivasha
Lake Naivasha is a fresh water lake in the Rift Valley. It hosts an amazing birdlife and the adjacent small lake, Lake Oloidien, is occasionally visited by Lesser Flamingos. We’ll spend the morning on the lake photographing the sunrise with the Flamingos or the African Fish Eagle fishing.

This safari will be for a maximum of 8 guests on two vehicles. Each guest will have a full row of seats available to photograph comfortably on both sides. Couples may request to share a row of seats, for a maximum of 1 couple per vehicle. Minimum of 5 guests are required for the safari to take place.

Vehicles have ample side openings, supports for tripod heads, open roof and ample space and loads of bean bags on board. The whole trip will be by road.

In Amboseli NP we will be based in one of the two lodges located inside the park in a perfect central position to reach the swamps, the plains and the lake. All rooms are en-suite and equipped with sockets for charging equipment. There is also a pool for the hottest hours if desired. In Masai Mara NR we will stay at a small camp on the banks of the Olare Orok river in the heart of the Mara, in excellent position to photograph wildlife in all the reserve. Sockets for charging equipment are supplied in the mess tent. On the way from Amboseli to Mara we will spend one night in Lake Naivasha, in a small lodge on the lake shore.

All accommodation will be on full-board basis, including breakfast, lunch and dinner. We will always have packed breakfast during our game drive, and depending on the situation, also lunch.

Federico Veronesi will be your guide for the whole safari. He will share his time equally between the two vehicles.
